Is the certification recognized across Canada?
Yes. The YMCA developed the first nationally recognized Fitness Leadership program in 1974 and continues to train Fitness Leaders today. By fostering relationship building, YMCA fitness programs create a positive atmosphere where members can achieve their personal goals.

If I already have certification from another body can I upgrade to the YMCA certification?

Does my university or college Kinesiology or PHED help with my YMCA accreditation?

How do I gain a fitness instruction position at the YMCA?
Since the earliest days of YMCA physical education, program directors have recruited from the membership people who exemplify the spiritual, physical and mental values honoured by the YMCA. These individuals volunteer their time and train hard to serve as instructors, coaches, mentors and counsellors for other YMCA members. This tradition remains unbroken to this day.

Can I teach specialized fitness classes like yoga or Pilates?
The YMCA is not a certifying body for yoga or Pilates. Our program focuses on group fitness classes that use resistance, choreography, group cycle, strength and stretch or aqua fitness as a foundation.

Can I take the Group Fitness, Individual Conditioning and Aquatic Fitness courses at the same time?
We recommend you focus on one program area at time and build a comprehensive knowledge of one subject area. However, after you have completed a stream we encourage you to expand your learning in applied theory, practicum, CPR/First Aid and practical evaluation.

How current are the training materials and manual?
All courses use material updated on a national level in 2006. Our team of experts from across Canada researched, developed and planned the information that is used in our Fitness Leadership Course.

What are the benefits of becoming a YMCA member?
By
becoming a YMCA member you will save on your YMCA Canada Fitness Leadership Program registration fees, gain a greater sense of belonging, build stronger connections throughout our community and grow personally and professionally.

What about recertification? How many credits will you need to earn?
Your certification is valid for two years, but to maintain the quality of your Fitness Leadership knowledge and skills you must be recertified by the end of this term. Learn more about the

Are courses, conferences and workshops offered regularly?
Yes, there are many opportunities to continue your education. The workshops range from two hours to full-day training. Two annual events are offered to volunteers and staff:
- Annual YMCA of Greater Toronto Volunteer Leadership Conference (September-October)
3-day workshop & educational continuance
- Annual YMCA Canada-Fitness Fever (June-July)
