When Tony’s father lost his job, it became a turning point for the whole family. To help the family during this time of need, Tony and his brothers considered various options – including the possibility of joining a street gang. Many of Tony’s friends were gang members, and new friends were being recruited all the time. The possibility of adopting this dangerous lifestyle was very real and immediate.

Although Tony’s father was out of work, he realized the importance of keeping his children safe. So he turned to the YMCA of Greater Toronto. With funds raised through our annual campaign, we were able to provide Tony and his family with financial assistance to join their local YMCA. The activities offered at the YMCA kept Tony and his brothers off the street and out of gangs. Better yet, they also encouraged Tony to pursue different options to help his family. Today, Tony has his first part-time job – as a YMCA lifeguard.
