Sparring & Tournaments

Sparring
Sparring techniques emphasize the use of kicks, blocks and strikes in combinations designed to score points according to World Taekwondo Federation rules. Students will also learn competition tactics and ring management as they spar, which will maximize their success should they choose to compete in local tournaments. This training will develop the fitness levels of students and there is a strong emphasis on fair play, safety and enjoyment of the experience.

As students move into higher belts levels, they’re going to be sparring with some contact. As a normal procedure, they should be wearing safety gear which can be purchased through the instructors during class or ordered through us by email at chris.park@ymcagta.org.

We suggest obtaining sparring gear and safety equipment after students reach the yellow-belt level. You can still participate in the class if you don’t have gear, but you must be careful during sparring. We will have full sparring every three to four weeks, during which students are expected to come in fully dressed with equipment on. Please check our important dates and announcements for sparring session schedule

Students may purchase everything in a set or buy them individually. Orders may be placed during class through your instructor or via email at chris.park@ymcagta.org. We’ll respond with the price for your particular order along with a confirmation number. You will then be able to pick up your equipment during your regularly scheduled class.

Tournaments

Students can attend competitions where they can put their practice into action. These tournaments provide the chance to display sparring skills and patterns. There are usually two ways to compete - either in patterns or sparring, or in both.

The tournament divisions are by age, belt and size. It’s mandatory that students have all their equipment to compete at these tournaments. Costs vary for each event - please look for each tournament package for details. If you have any questions, you can ask the instructor.
