1. Is Canada a free and democratic country?
Yes. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms of every Canadian – including freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of peaceful assembly, and freedom of association. 2. Does Canada have clean air, clean water, and safe food?
Yes, but these can no longer be taken for granted. Air and water pollution, as well as food safety, are increasingly important issues. For more information about Canada’s environment, see the Environment Canada Web site and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Web site.
3. Is Canada a socially tolerant society?
Yes. Canada is proud of its multiculturalism. People from every part of the world live together in peace and tolerance, and the government of Canada encourages people to maintain their heritage and cultural traditions.
4. Does Canada have an affordable health care system?
Canada’s health care system covers health care services that are medically necessary. It is not based on your ability to pay. Known to Canadians as "Medicare", the system gives you access to a wide range of hospital and physician services. This publicly funded system is best described as a set of 10 provincial and three territorial health insurance plans. Each province and territory manages its own health care plan.

If you arrive alone, however, there are many free services to provide you with settlement information, language training, and job support. The YMCA can help you access these services. 9. Can someone help me learn English or French?
Both the federal and provincial governments offer programs to help you learn English or French. Some of these programs are free, and some charge a small fee. You can also attend a college or university course to learn English or French. Get more information about the language training programs available to you.
