Can the YMCA help me learn English?
If you are a landed immigrant or a convention refugee 18 years of age or older, you qualify for the YMCA Language Assessment and Referral Centre program. This program can help you improve your English language skills.2.
Is your language program free?
Yes, the language program is completely free.3.
How does your language program work?
To apply for the YMCA language program, please call us at (416) 925-5462. When you call, we will schedule you for an appointment to take an English language test.
When you come in for your test, please bring immigration documents that show you are a landed immigrant or convention refugee. After you take the test, we will decide which level you are in. There are five levels in the program, ranging from Basic to Intermediate English.
Once you finish Level 5, you receive an English language certificate. This certificate is not a diploma, as our language program is not an academic program. Instead, it is funded by Citizenship & Immigration Canada to help newcomers learn English for free.

As a charity that serves all segments of our community, the YMCA of Greater Toronto provides financial assistance for all of our programs. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, members, community partners, corporate partners, volunteers, and staff, no one is denied access to a YMCA program simply because they cannot pay the full fee. If you would like to apply for financial assistance, please let the YMCA know when you call to ask about our programs or at the time of registration. Together, we can provide all our members with opportunities for personal growth, community involvement, and leadership.
