International YMCA Experience - Part 2
In September 2006, Denise Burnett, Case Manager at YMCA House, had the opportunity to explore the programs available at YMCA Jamaica with her Henry Labatte Scholarship.  Her trip took her to the Kingston YMCA, Spanish Town YMCA, Montego Bay YMCA, Boys Town, The Amy Bailey Center, Children First and the Brashy Bus.

In Jamaica, Denise participated in:

  • One to one Counselling
  • Class rap sessions
  • The introduction of a Peace Pledge
  • The renovation of the classrooms for a new school term

Education is a major barrier to success for Jamaican youth. The YMCA Jamaica recognizes that a better future relies on the education of youths and helps fulfill this need.

Denise witnessed that a lack funding does not affect the dedication and enthusiasm of staff, volunteers and youth at the YMCA or hinder meeting the needs of the community.

This was a life affirming experience for Denise.  It changed her views of the YMCA and clarified why the YMCA does the work that it does. Her visit to the YMCA was well-timed and all those who interacted with her – staff, students and parents – benefited greatly from her contribution.
