Ryan Powell
A young man of vision and courage, Ryan Powell graduated from Notre Dame Secondary School in 2006, after bringing about a profound and positive change in the culture of the school.

While a student at Notre Dame (whose motto is “Justice, Love and Peace”) Ryan recognized that many of his fellow black male students were doing poorly academically and that, as a result, their opportunities would be limited in the future.  He took it upon himself to organize a committee to study the problem and consider possible solutions.

The committee investigated an array of underlying issues, which included bias in the curriculum, student motivation, negative cultural and peer influences and the role of athletics.  With the help of Carl James of York University, Ryan and the committee conducted an extensive survey of Notre Dame students and organized a student forum—a forum which, Dr. James notes, was unprecedented in the Greater Toronto Area.  75 black male students volunteered to participate in the day-long event, which was a resounding success as they openly and intelligently communicated their hopes, fears, concerns and dreams for the future.

Together the students mapped out a strategy that could be implemented to improve student performance.  The forum created new awareness and understanding between staff and students and ignited the community’s desire to continue bringing about much-needed change.

Ryan Powell challenged his peers and teachers to explore an issue that is regarded by many as “too politically sensitive” to tackle.  He showed remarkable maturity and resiliency as he guided this important project to fruition.

In the weeks that followed, a tangible difference was evident at Notre Dame Secondary School.  Lines of communication were opened between teachers and black male students.  Departments reassessed their curriculums.  The librarian took steps to ensure that reading materials more accurately reflected the cultural make-up the school.  Students began to show a much deeper sense of responsibility toward their education and their futures.  All of these positive changes continue today thanks to the efforts of Ryan Powell, who has now gone on to post-secondary education at McMaster University.
