Currently the Principal of Anderson Collegiate in Ajax, educator
and peacemaker John Morrison has made a significant positive impact
throughout the Region of Durham.
While Vice-Principal of Ajax High School, John Morrison started a new initiative called the “Culture of Peace” committee. He saw this new school group as an opportunity for students and staff to make a difference, not only at Ajax H.S. but in the wider community and the world. Today, “Culture of Peace” committees are thriving in many more schools in Durham and throughout Ontario.
At Anderson C.V.I., John Morrison has spearheaded many activities that foster peace and build awareness of human rights issues. First, he nurtures and mentors his students by drawing their attention to these issues and encouraging them to get involved. In addition, he brings in motivational speakers who can add their powerful voice to the “Culture of Peace” at the school. General Romeo Dallaire, author of “Shake Hands With the Devil”, described the atrocities and genocide in Rwanda. Holocaust survivor and author Eva Olsson related her struggles as a Jewish woman during World War II. The autobiographical books of James Bartleman told his story as a young aboriginal man who overcame discrimination and poverty to become Ontario’s Lieutenant-Governor. These speakers inspire and motivate everyone within the school community, who unite in the cause of peace and justice.
In addition to his work in the educational setting, John Morrison speaks regularly at churches, school boards and community service groups where he continues to spread his message of peace and human rights. He has been a leader and participant in countless peacemaking events, including the Ontario Conference on War Affected Children, the National Conference on the Rights of the Child, the United Nations Summit on War Affected Children, The White Ribbon Campaign Against Men’s Violence Against Women, Amnesty International, Students Against Impaired Driving, the Community Walk of Peace and many more. His work on the Tsunami Relief Drive, in collaboration with the Whitby Rotary Club, was recently recognized by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.
An inspiring leader who devotes himself to causes of human rights, John Morrison educates others by example—both at school and in all areas of life.
