Kamil Sadiq, a visionary and humanitarian, was a resident of
Markham for many years. Committed throughout his life to
creating an inclusive, equitable and peaceful society for all, he
influenced countless lives through positive social change in York
Region. In 2002, Kamil Sadiq was inducted into the
Markham Seniors Hall of Fame. He was also the recipient
of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.
Early in 2002, Kamil Sadiq gathered together a group of community leaders to discuss the formation of a new association to enhance the relationship of the many cultures in Canada. The Canadian Federation of Intercultural Friendship (CFIF) includes representatives of many ethnic groups including the South Asian, Arabian, Italian, Caribbean, African and Chinese communities. Members share their ideals, exchange principles and seek non-violent and non-prejudiced ways to resolve conflicts. The CFIF is a non-profit organization with ties to many cultural organizations, government agencies, police services and the Canadian International Peace Project.
In 2004, Kamil Sadiq initiated a new partnership between the CFIF, police agencies and municipal government, which led to the formation of the Canadian Federation of Intercultural Friendship Community and Police Committee. With members from the York Regional Police, O.P.P. and R.C.M.P., as well as deputy mayors and councillors from all nine municipalities within York Region, this important alliance acts as a voice for all the region’s communities while reflecting their rich cultural mosaic. The partnership helps creates an atmosphere conducive to ongoing peace throughout York Region.
In May and June, 2006, Kamil Sadiq ushered in official proclamations in the towns of Whitchurch-Stouffville and East Gwillimbury, stating that they are inclusive communities in which diversity is celebrated and embraced. Both proclamations were adopted unanimously.
Kamil Sadiq’s dedication to the promotion of peace and harmony was evident throughout his life. As a young man in Pakistan he created a service organization that grew to 5000 members. As a citizen of Markham, he devoted himself to serving others and creating a more peaceful and just society.
On September 2006, at the age of 75, Kamil Sadiq passed away after a battle with cancer. In recognition of his lifetime of humanitarian work, he is honoured with a YMCA Peace Medallion.
