GTA Swimmers Make Connections in Kingston

Y Knot SwimmersOn February 23, the Y Knot swim teams from the Kingston, Durham and Mississauga YMCAs participated in the first annual Y Knot Fun Relay Meet in Kingston. The Y Knot program is designed to allow children with physical disabilities find pride and success through achievement. Participants have the opportunity to have fun, make friends and get fit while building confidence and self-esteem.

Marathon swimmers Vicki Keith — who founded the Y Knot Abilities Programs — and her husband, John Munro, ran the event. The teams, consisting of both disabled children and their able-bodied siblings, competed in five friendly races: front crawl, back crawl, individual medley (a combination of back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly and free style), one lap while holding a cone, and then a team sprint while holding pool equipment such as floatation noodles.

After the races, the families enjoyed a pizza dinner and a spirited game of wheelchair basketball in the gym. All the participants enjoyed connecting with each other, and the event was a resounding success.
