Toronto Gets Active

The City of Toronto has launched a new media campaign to promote Get Your Move On. This active living initiative is co-chaired by Toronto Mayor David Miller and the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s President & CEO Scott Haldane.

The dynamic campaign urges everyone in Toronto to make the connections they need to become more physically active. Through the Get Your Move On website and phone line, Torontonians can find information on thousands of fitness opportunities in their communities - including the numerous programs and activities available through YMCA Health, Fitness and Recreation Centres.

In 2004, leaders in Toronto’s public, voluntary and private sectors created Get Your Move On to address epidemic levels of physical inactivity in our city. The campaign aims to reduce barriers to healthy, active living. Partners in the initiative include Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and Toronto Public Health.

The new public service announcements feature Mayor David Miller, a cyclist. It’s running on OMNI Television in five languages (English, Mandarin, Tamil, Farsi and Spanish) and also appears on the Air Canada Centre’s Jumbotron and on Leafs TV and Raptors NBA TV. Print advertising is also visible throughout the city.

Madeline Ziniak, Vice-President and Station Manager of OMNI Television, says “We applaud Get Your Move On for its efforts to reduce barriers to physical activity, particularly for children and families and for recognizing the importance of reaching communities in their language of comfort on this important issue.”
