For some, the Y is where they first learned to swim. For others, it’s where they gained valuable employment skills. But for 105 summer day campers, the YMCA has now become the scene of their very first rock concert.
Internationally-acclaimed rock band The White Stripes surprised the day campers and about 50 of their fans by putting on a free show in the auditorium at the Metro-Central YMCA just hours before their gig at the Molson Amphitheatre on July 5.
Siblings Jack and Meg White are on a North American tour in support of their latest release “Icky Thump”. At every stop along the way, the band has tried to play a non-advertised free show in a community space that attracts youth.
So how did the 3-time Grammy winners end up playing at the auditorium at Metro-Central? “I googled ‘Toronto’ and ‘fun’ and the YMCA is the first thing that came up,” said White Stripes tour manager, Gabe Kerbrat, who then contacted the YMCA for permission.
During the summer months, the auditorium at Metro-Central is used by summer day camp staff. Luckily, the space was available and in turn, the summer day campers were all invited to come and experience their first rock concert.
At one point during the 30 minute set, Jack White invited a few members of the audience up to sing. One young child care participant sang “the wheels on the bus” with Meg White accompanying on percussion, while summer camper Dylan brought the house down with an interpretive version of “I believe I can fly.”
“Better than R. Kelly,” said Jack White afterwards.
In all, the White Stripes played five songs before saying goodbye to their fans.
“This was a fabulous opportunity for the children to experience a live concert with their new friends in the comfort of our YMCA,” said Lisa Rankin, Director, Training, Child, Youth & Family Development. “It is also great to know that bands as reputable as the White Stripes are committed to inspiring our youth through their music. Who Knows? Maybe Dylan will become a future rock star!”
