The YMCA has a long history of supporting troops and communities during times of war and first introduced the wearing of poppies in remembrance of those whose lives were lost.
During the World War I, the YMCA provided food, organized discussion and music appreciation groups, talent nights, poetry and essay contests and pioneered the first mass handiwork program in wood, metal, leather, plastic and textiles for the community. The Y also entertained troops with its "Dramatic School" and turned out 19 shows. The most famous show, "Dumbells", was so popular it later toured Canada and performed on Broadway.
During both World Wars, YMCA officers created dugouts at the sides of trenches on the front lines to distribute hot drinks, writing paper, reading materials and other comforts. The YMCA became especially known during WWII for its tea truck that delivered hot tea and biscuits to soldiers.
