YMCA Peace Medallion Ceremonies Honour Community Leaders
YMCA Peace Week 2007Community peacemakers from all across the Greater Toronto Area received the YMCA Peace Medallion during YMCA World Peace Week, November 17th to 24th. Ten ceremonies were held throughout the Association to recognize individuals from all walks of life who are striving to create a more peaceful world.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the YMCA Peace Medallion. It’s an important part of YMCA World Peace Week, an annual event sponsored by YMCA International Programs. The theme of YMCA World Peace Week this year was “The Power of Peace, The Power of People”.

To qualify, nominees must:
  • Find peaceful solutions to violence, conflict, discrimination and injustice
  • Make a difference without any special recognition to create a culture of peace
  • Volunteer their time and work without any special resources
  • Enhance the lives of people in their community and around the world by creating a more peaceful environment

In each region, a selection committee looks carefully at all nominations, to see how well they align with the Peace Medallion criteria. YMCA Youth Leader Corps and volunteers are actively involved both in selecting the Peace Medallion recipients and planning the ceremonies.

Each year, YMCA Peace Medallion ceremonies are inspiring events that connect YMCA staff, members, volunteers and the community…as we all work together to create a culture of peace in Toronto, in Canada and around the world.
