After entering foster care at the age of six, Jordan began experiencing serious behavioral issues. By the time he turned 10, he’d been passed to five different homes in that year alone. His current foster mother described his behaviour as angry, and said he often had violent outbursts and used offensive language. When she arrived at her local YMCA in late June, she wanted to send Jordan to a YMCA Day Camp, but she was very concerned about his ability to fit in.
Although the YMCA representative had some concerns, she accepted Jordan into the camp program. Within the first week, she was convinced she had made a mistake. Jordan’s counsellors were frustrated and he was fighting with the other campers. Two parents of other children had already called with concerns.
Despite these challenges, the counsellors decided to let Jordan finish his second week of camp. That Monday morning, his YMCA representative visited the camp program and found Jordan playing cards with one of the junior campers. Rather than intervening, she watched as Jordan carefully dealt the cards and patiently explained the rules of the game.
When people say they prefer to donate to organizations that save lives, Jordan’s YMCA representative knows just the right answer. “We do save lives,” she says. “We saved Jordan’s.”

By donating to the YMCA you can help a child like Jordan learn and grow this summer. Donate now!
