Job Search Strategies
There are a variety of ways that you can discover a job opportunities including:
  • Personal Contacts and Networking
  • Cold Calling
  • Internet Job Searches
  • Print Job Advertisements (ie. Newspapers)
  • Employment Agencies
Conducting a successful job search includes:
  • Marketing yourself to by highlighting your skills and experiences that make you an exceptional candidate
  • Knowing the industry and employer you are targeting by visiting the employer’s website and reading about the job or career
  • Telling everyone that you are looking for a job and sharing your job interests. The people in your life can help you land your next job. 
  • Making yourself known to employers. Try contacting potential employers by phone, knocking on doors or booking information interviews.

Looking for work can be a stressful and overwhelming experience, so don’t be afraid to ask for help at a YMCA Employment Centre.

Service Canada Job Bank is a bilingual government site that posts government, corporate and not-for-profit jobs from across Canada.  The site provides a number of assessment tests that will help you decide what careers fit your personality, skills and interests.

Yahoo! Hot Jobs is a national job bank.  A variety of organizations advertise employment opportunities on this resource and the site features job search tips in Career Tools.

Brain Hunter is a bilingual job board that advertises international job opportunities in various sectors.  Many of the jobs posted on this resource require a post secondary education.

Monster is a very large career portal with thousands of job posting in Greater Toronto Area.  Employers from all sectors advertise employment opportunities.  The Career Centre features resources and articles with the latest employment news and job search tips.

Workopolis is a national resource used by employers from various employment sectors.  The jobs database supports a variety of search methods.  The resource centre provides employment news, assessment tests and job search tips.     

Working.Com includes national job advertisements from 37 newspaper and television Web sites.  You can browse new postings or by employer or job title.

The People Bank  features temporary, contract and permanent positions and functions primarily as a temp agency.  Many different job types and levels are posted on this resource.
